  1. Alexandra Zapruder, editor of Salvaged Pages, a collection of children s Holocaust diaries, believes this diary isn t genuine and was in fact mostly or entirely authored by Eva s mother, Agnes Zoldt, who committed suicide after the war I respect Ms Zapruder s scholarship and thus read this diary with a jaundiced eye, but I can t find anything that leads me to believe it was written by anyone other than Eva The voice sounds like an intelligent thirteen year old girl to me Though the diary only co [...]

  2. Eva Heyman was born Nagyvarad, Hungary in 1931 She lived with her grandparents as her parents were divorced Here she writes of her life in 1944, with her friends and family, before being deported to her death, at the age of 13 , because she was Jewish. We read of a lively and intelligent 13 year old girl growing up in a assimilated middle class Jewish family, and how their security was removed after the Nazi invasion of Hungary, leading to their poverty, then being forced to the camps and finally [...]

  4. va s story is moving People often reference her as the Anne Frank of Hungary Romania That is not quite a fair comparison Both died young due to the Holocaust, but they both had different aspirations and completely different writing styles In the hundreds of Holocaust books I have read, this is one of my favorites If you are interested in knowing what life was like for a well off family in Nazi occupied Hungary Romania, this book will move you va speaks about her mother s relationship with her an [...]

  7. This book, in English, is a translation of an original work which came out in 1948 , in Hungarian, and was published by Agnes Zsolt, Eva s mother.Subsequently it was translated to Hebrew and later from Hebrew to English.Along the way, well meaning and honest scholars, added some pages and a few illustrations to better tell the whole story In this form it has been presented to the English reading public Later scholars , reading this version, conjured the possibility that it may have been glossed [...]

  8. The red bicycle the diary of the Hungarian Anne Frank is a good and a bad book, boring and a shocking at the same time In itself it s just a not very well written diary of a thirteen years old girl, with some obvious posterior editing but the historical events behind it, the knowledge that these things actually happened makes this book a deeply touching and heavy reading.
