  1. I won this book on.I initially entered to win this book because I have an old high school friend in federal prison whom I write to and have visited My friend doesn t give me sordid details This book sometimes had information than I could handle or wanted to know It was, however beautifully written with eloquent descriptions that put one in the time and place described The intelligence is apparent in the author s writing It is a story full of deep emotion, confusion, insight and disgust A real r [...]

  2. Certainly an interesting book, but found it to be a bid of a difficult read Not being able to understand the frequent Spanish phrases, I think took away from it reading smoothly The author is able to transport you into his world, as he is serving a 25yrs to life prison term for murder.

  3. I m not one to actually pick up much memoirs, much less a prison memoirs, but I figured it would be an interesting read from someone from the inside looking out instead of the opposite This is a powerful memoir by first time author Darcleight, who is currently serving 25 years to life for murder, a crime that he barely remembers committing while deeply addicted to heroin, a dope sick animal in a confined space Locked away, he finds a new kind of liberty through reading and writing, a freedom und [...]

  4. A prison memoir might not be the first book you d choose to read But Danner Darcleight s prison memoir has plot and purpose, powerful prose, and a uniquely wary and honest approach that draws you in from the start and won t let go Sometimes railing at the noise and inequities of the prison system sometimes pulling you so close with second person narration that you ll almost believe you could have been there, done that sometimes distant with first person secrets untold a crime unrevealed, an inju [...]

  5. I think as a consequence of being an inmate and having nothing but time, this book tended to sprawl Long chapters arranged around central themes The author can seem, I don t know if arrogant is the right word, perhaps, he is just showing off a bit, to the let the reader know he has the vocabulary and is well read He likes to make cultural references, for instance, he s a big fan of the Simpsons which he admits later, but it was obvious after he made two subtle references in the same amount of pa [...]

  6. Surprisingly polished memoir of a man in prison for 25 years to life It s very adeptly written, switching between flashbacks to his youth and still giving a candid look into the life among inmates in prison The author narrator is likeable at least in the present incarnation of his life, as he s gained enough self respect to get clean, examine his own life, and show a respect and tolerance for his fellow man I suspect he was a devil of an unlikeable spoiled young man You won t find the scandals o [...]

  7. This was an insider s look at inmate life in a prison It was well written and interesting The author seemed intent on letting the reader know that he was not the stereotypical inmate He didn t have abusive parents, he was led an entitled life, he went to college, he was multilingual, his crime was because of drugs, ok, that was typical The text was hard to follow as the flow was interrupted by many Spanish phrases which were not interpreted for the reader I also felt that the reader was supposed [...]
