  1. I have only recently started reading Ruth Rendell books and have found them generally engaging and refreshing in much the same way I found Agatha Christie books all those years ago. This book is a series of short stories that in all honesty was a complete mixed bag of good, bad and boring. The title story is definitely the best but sadly the rest failed to meet my interest.

  2. Ruth Rendell s short stories read to me how I imagined and hoped grown up Point Horror would do She has a meticulous way of capturing the reader s attention and holding on tight, creating as she does so 11 tales of chilling and flesh creeping enjoyment that will stay at the back of your mind for ages to come

  3. I was very interested to see how Rendell did in short form and no disappointment here A lot of her earlier novels were very lean and this is just sort of like taking that to the extreme These are still very much Rendellian stories, they have the exact same twisty demented sort of heart at the center of a seemingly normal scenarios She remains firmly within the genre of psychological dark suspense And these were very entertaining short visits to her strange and scary world Additional kudos to the [...]

  4. Some of these are quite good The New Girlfriend is a classic of course, which I read back in my first year of university It s very likely the best story in here These tales actually remind me of a slightly modern and British Cornell Woolrich at times The Convolvolus Clock was charming and sad, with the dotty old lady being eaten away by guilt because in a fit of peak she stole something from a rural art gallery The Whistler was an uneasy tale with an ending that was predictable yet satisfying I [...]

  5. It s probably safe to say that Ruth Rendell is best known for her novels, particularly the Inspector Wexford series However, Rendell has also written her share of short stories, including the ones in THE NEW GIRL FRIEND, named for the Edgar winning short story. The anthology is comprised of 11 stories, all of which are suspenseful, but have than that going for them They are studies in human nature and how our foibles can sometimes lead to disastrous results.Despite being somewhat uneven in quali [...]

  6. An enjoyable selection of Ruth Rendell s short stories When deciding on the number of stars to give as a rating, I was minded to give three, as collections such as this often contain middling kinds of stories that are entertaining diversions without much to commend them, and there are perhaps one or such stories in this collection In the end, though, I thought I d go for four stars to match the best of the stories Of the stories here, The New Girlfriend is perhaps the most well known, but in the [...]

  7. Short stories by the wonderful Ruth Rendell always such a treat One of these days, I m going to reach the end of my Rendell Vine to read list I m not looking forward to that sad day I love how she can show us a seemingly normal person a loving father, a businessman husband, a couple buying a house and, bit by bit, show us how they unravel Not a bad story in the bunch but Loopy really creeped me out.

  8. I heard there was a film coming out based on Rendell s title hort story here and had to grab this to check it out Now intrigued to see the film As usual, Rendell completely masters psychological twisty tales Light side, meet your dark side So glad she was prolific so I have lots of her works to look forward to.

  9. A very uneven collection of stories I ve had this book sitting on my shelf for years, and finally got to it on my recent trip to Oregon The title story is deliciously ill, and there are some other really good stories, but in many cases, the surprise endings are so loudly telegraphed that you just KNOW how it s going to end Takes away any of the suspense

  10. I wasn t going to write a review, but then I learned that the author died today Which is sad, but I was reading her last story The Green Road to Quephanda about the time she died It was kind of strange because it deals with a man spending a few moments in the imaginary world of his writer friend.

  12. Read so far New girl friend A dark blue perfume Orchard walls Hare s house Bribery and corruption Whistler Convolvulus clock Loopy Fen Hall Father s day Green road to Quephanda

  13. I wasn t particularly touched by any of the characters in this series of short stories, but the scenarios presented were interesting A good read for the bus, if you don t want to get involved in a full novel.
